We try to keep a deep bench of breeders, both bucks and does. We have worked hard to bring in lines from a wide variety of rabbitries from all over the United States, and are always on the lookout for new talent. Every single individual in our program brings something to the table, so if you have a practiced "show posing" eye you are likely to miss the holistic view that we see in any given animal. (And we are by no means accomplished posers here--our rabbits are barn-bunnies, not show queens. They tolerate nail trims and weigh-ins, but most of them turn into bucking broncs when you try to pose them...we pick our battles.) "Breed the best and cull the rest" is very subjective, and means something different in every barn. Here we place top priority on temperament and breed-ability (mellowness, fertility, ease of mating, litter survival rates, milk production, etc). After that comes size and growth rates. Finally, we work on adherence to the almighty SOP (standard of perfection) of the ARBA. We look at each rabbit as a total package...what one may lack in "peak" or "shoulders" it will make up for in some other areas. We attempt to plan pairings to better the next generation with complimentary strengths from both parents. The "homeliest" girl in our barn by ARBA standards is our runaway rock-star mom. She'd raise a baby skunk if we asked her to. She's also as friendly as a puppy dog and passes that temperament on to her litters. A judge would laugh her off the table, no doubt...but she has been one of our most valuable foundation does and will retire here a queen. That's how we judge perfection in our barn. Our barn, our rules. Your barn, your rules!
